Your Shammah Wonders representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your pre-climb accommodation in Moshi. This evening, your lead guide delivers a full pre-climb briefing, walking you through the Lemosho Route eight-day profile, what to expect from the changing terrain, altitude management, and how our team will support
you every step of the way. The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the finest all-round route on Kilimanjaro — longer than the Machame, more gradual in its acclimatization profile, and far less crowded on the mountain western approach. Its 8-day itinerary consistently produces above-average summit success rates and extraordinary scenery from start to finish.
• Accommodation: Dimond Delight Boutique Hotel
• Meals: Dinner included
After a 3–4 hour drive from Moshi, your team arrives at Londorossi Gate (2,100 m / 6,890 ft) on Kilimanjaro's remote western side — one of the least-trafficked entry points on the mountain. Permits are registered and packs are checked before the trail enters the montane rainforest.
Today's trek is gentle and immersive: a winding path through ancient forest rich with colobus monkeys, Kilimanjaro hornbills, and the sound of unseen streams. The trees are enormous, the air cool and green, and the sense of being genuinely alone in a wild place is immediate and powerful. This is the Lemosho experience from the very first step. Mti Mkubwa Camp ( “Big Tree Camp” 2,895 m / 9,498 ft) sits at the forest's upper boundary, a beautiful clearing surrounded by tall trees where your team will have camp established and dinner ready on arrival.
Distance: ~7 km / 4.5 miles
Duration: 3–4 hours
Altitude gain: +795 m
Start: Londorossi Gate (2,100 m) → Camp: Mti Mkubwa (2,895 m)
Leaving the forest, today's trail ascends into the heath and moorland zone — a striking transition where forest gives way to open heathland covered in giant heather, Erica arborea, and the first lobelia plants that characterize Kilimanjaro's mid-altitude landscape. The trail gains elevation steadily, and the views expand dramatically with every hour. By early afternoon, you reach the edge of the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's three ancient volcanic cones, now a vast high-altitude moorland with unobstructed views of Kibo rising above the plateau to the east. Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m / 11,480 ft) offers sweeping panoramas in all directions — a humbling first encounter with the scale of this mountain.
Distance: ~8 km / 5 miles
Duration: 5–6 hours
Altitude gain: +605 m
Start: Mti Mkubwa (2,895 m) → Camp: Shira 1 (3,500 m)
Today's trek across the Shira Plateau is one of Kilimanjaro's most rewarding walking days — a broad, open landscape under an immense sky, with the southern glaciers of Kibo visible ahead and (on clear days) the distant outline of Mount Meru to the west. The plateau walk leads to Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m / 12,598 ft), where altitude begins to make itself felt. Lunch is followed by a recommended 2-hour acclimatization hike towards the base of Lava Tower, climbing an additional 200–260 meters before returning to camp. "This climb high,
sleep low" approach is central to the Lemosho Route's higher success rate — the extra day and extra acclimatization hike make a measurable difference on summit night.
Distance: ~9 km / 5.6 miles (plus optional 4 km acclimatization hike)
Duration: 4–5 hours main trek
Altitude gain: +340 m
Camp: Shira 2 (3,840 m)
Today is the highest point of your pre-summit days — a long, rewarding traverse across the alpine desert zone to Lava Tower. The vegetation grows increasingly sparse as you gain altitude, and the dramatic volcanic geology of Kilimanjaro's upper flanks becomes the dominant landscape. Lava Tower (4,630 m / 15,190 ft) is reached in time for lunch, and time at this altitude is invaluable for acclimatization. Your body is quietly making the physiological adjustments that will determine your summit performance. After a rest here, the trail descends to Barranco Camp
(3,960 m / 12,992 ft), where the towering Barranco Wall and the glaciers of Kibo's southern face dominate the skyline.
Distance: ~10 km / 6 miles
Duration: 6–8 hours
Altitude: High point Lava Tower (4,630 m), overnight Barranco Camp (3,960 m)
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall — a thrilling 257-metre rock scramble that is as exciting as it is achievable. Your guides will lead you safely through the exposure, and the views from the top of the wall across Kilimanjaro's southern face are simply extraordinary. This is one of the moments climbers remember longest. Beyond the wall, the trail traverses across the southern flank of the mountain, crossing a series of ridges and valleys with glacier views above and the Tanzanian plains visible far below. Karanga Camp (4,035 m / 13,238 ft) is a quieter, more intimate camp than Barranco — an excellent place to rest, eat well, and hydrate aggressively in preparation for the summit push now two days away.
Distance: ~5 km / 3 miles
Duration: 4–5 hours
Altitude gain: +75 m net
Start: Barranco Camp (3,960 m) → Camp: Karanga Camp (4,035 m)
Today is a relatively short but psychologically significant stage: the ascent to Barafu Camp (4,673 m / 15,331 ft), Kilimanjaro's primary summit base camp and the last stop before Uhuru Peak. The trail climbs steadily through barren, rocky terrain — vegetation has largely disappeared, and the mountain feels vast and elemental. By early afternoon you reach camp. Your guide will walk you through the summit night briefing in detail: departure time (typically midnight to 1:00am),
pace, clothing strategy, what to eat and drink, and how to recognise and respond to symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Dinner is served at 5:00pm. Rest begins immediately after. Your alarm goes off at 11:30pm.
Distance: ~5 km / 3 miles
Duration: 3–4 hours
Altitude gain: +638 m
Camp: Barafu Camp (4,673 m)
Around midnight, your team wakes, layers up, and steps into the dark. The ascent to Uhuru Peak begins. The trail from Barafu Camp (4,673 m) climbs relentlessly through loose volcanic scree towards Stella Point (5,739 m) on the crater rim — the first milestone, typically reached in 5–6 hours. At this altitude, the air contains roughly half the oxygen available at sea level. Every step is intentional. Your guide walks beside you, monitoring your pace and wellbeing throughout. At Stella Point, the crater rim opens before you. The summit glaciers — the Rebmann, Decken,
and Furtwängler — rise from the crater floor. The final 45-minute walk along the rim leads to the iconic Uhuru Peak sign at 5,895 meters / 19,341 feet — the highest point in Africa. If you arrive at sunrise, the light over the endless plains of Tanzania and Kenya below is one of the most breathtaking sights on Earth.
Celebrate. Photograph. Absorb the achievement. Then your guide begins the long descent — through Barafu Camp for a rest stop and lunch, and all the way down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m). Your legs will earn a thorough rest tonight.
Summit ascent: ~5–7 hours | Barafu (4,673 m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)
Total descent: ~5–6 hours | Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp (3,100 m)
Breakfast at 7:00am. Today's final descent through the forest zone is a celebration in every step. The tipping ceremony is held at camp — your porters, cooks, and guides have worked exceptionally hard and tips are the primary way of recognizing their contribution. The 9-kilometre trail to Mweka Gate (1,640 m) passes through the beautiful lower forest, alive with birdsong and the sound of streams — a world entirely different from the lunar landscape of the summit zone. At the gate, your Kilimanjaro summit certificate is presented, a cooked lunch
is served, and your transfer vehicle awaits for the drive back to Moshi or Arusha.
After a restful night at your hotel, breakfast awaits before the scheduled check-out by 10.00. (If you prefer to stay at the hotel during the day, please let us know when booking your trip, and we'll provide details about the cost for a day room until 18:00hrs, and then arrange the booking on your behalf.)
If you've arranged a transfer to the airport, you'll be picked up from your hotel and transported to the airport. For travelers heading on safari, our Shammah Wonders Safaris guide will meet you in the evening for a briefing
