Marangu Route 6 Days

Marangu Route 6 Days

Safari Overview

Marangu route recognized as the oldest pathway to Kilimanjaro's summit, earns the nickname "Coca Cola" Route. Similar to the beloved soft drink, it boasts immense popularity, making it an excellent choice for summiting. While often considered the most accessible route, it's important to note that climbing Kilimanjaro remains a challenging endeavor. Marangu offers a degree of comfort with overnight stays in mountain huts, a feature contributing to its appeal, especially during the rainy season when ascending remains feasible. Despite the increasing popularity of the Machame route, Marangu can still see significant foot traffic, as it serves for both ascent and descent. Our Easy Travel Marangu program spans six days on the mountain, allowing ample time for acclimatization and enhancing the likelihood of success.

Day to day description

Arrival Kilimanjaro International Airport to your pre-climb lodge

Your Shammah Wonders team collects you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi. The evening pre-climb briefing with your guide covers the Marangu Route's unique features: it is the only route on Kilimanjaro where climbers sleep in fixed mountain huts — the Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts — rather than tents. This adds a level of comfort and structure that appeals to many first-time high-altitude trekkers.

Accommodation: Silent Hill Hotel

Day 1 Moshi to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After breakfast and the drive to Marangu Gate (1,860 m / 6,102 ft), your guide completes registration and the climb begins through Kilimanjaro's montane rainforest — the same lush, green, moss-draped forest that makes the lower slopes of the mountain feel like a walk through another world. The path is clear and well-maintained, winding gradually upward through dense tree cover.
Birdlife is exceptional in this zone: silvery-cheeked hornbills, Hartlaub's turacos, and numerous sunbird species are regularly sighted. Keep your eyes on the canopy for black and white colobus monkeys. Mandara Hut (2,720 m / 8,924 ft) sits at the forest's upper edge. After settling in, an optional short walk to the rim of the small Maundi Crater (2,780 m) offers your first panoramic view over
the Kilimanjaro National Park. It is an excellent warm-up for the days ahead.

Distance: ~8 km / 5 miles
Duration: 3–4 hours
Altitude gain: +860 m
Accommodation: Mandara Hut (dormitory)

Day 2 Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Today the forest gives way to the open moorland and heathland zone — a completely different landscape of rolling hills covered in giant lobelia and Senecio kilimanjari, the extraordinary tree groundsel found only on the high slopes of Kilimanjaro. Mawenzi Peak's jagged profile comes into clear view to the northeast, a dramatic reminder of the mountain's volcanic origins. The trail today is longer and gains more elevation, but the pacing remains steady. Views extend across the plains below and, on clear days, far into Kenya. Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,205 ft) is a larger, sociable hut complex with sweeping views in all directions.

Distance: ~12 km / 7.5 miles
Duration: 5–7 hours
Altitude gain: +1,000 m
Accommodation: Horombo Hut (dormitory)

ℹ Some climbers begin to feel the effects of altitude more noticeably today. Mild headaches and reduced appetite are normal at 3,700+ metres. Drink consistently, walk slowly, and inform your guide of any symptoms.

Day 3 Horombo Hut to Zebra Rock to Horombo Hut

Today's trek crosses the Kilimanjaro Saddle — the broad, barren plateau that connects the Mawenzi and Kibo cones. This is one of the most exposed sections of the Marangu Route, a wide, flat moorland that transitions fully into alpine desert as you approach Kibo. Vegetation has almost entirely disappeared, and the landscape is austere, rocky, and magnificent in its starkness. Kibo Hut (4,700 m / 15,420 ft) is your summit base camp for the night. Arrive by mid-afternoon.
Dinner is served early. Sleep attempts begin at 7:00pm, when your guide will wake you at midnight for the summit push. Rest as much as you can — altitude and anticipation make this challenging, but the rest is valuable.

Distance: ~10 km / 6 miles
Duration: 5–6 hours
Altitude gain: +980 m
Accommodation: Kibo Hut (dormitory)

Day 4 Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Midnight. Headtorches on. Summit push begins. From Kibo Hut (4,700 m), the trail zigzags steeply up loose volcanic scree through the darkness. The cold at this altitude is severe — temperatures regularly fall to -15°C on summit night — but
your guide sets a steady, manageable pace. The first landmark is Gilman's Point (5,681 m / 18,638 ft) on the crater rim, typically reached in 5–6 hours. This is an official Kilimanjaro summit point and many climbers receive their first certificate here. But Uhuru Peak — the true summit — lies a further 45-minute traverse around the crater rim to the west. Every step at this altitude is an achievement. The views of Kilimanjaro's glaciers from the crater rim are extraordinary. Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft): the highest point in Africa. The moment of a lifetime.
The descent from the summit retraces the morning's route back to Kibo Hut, then continues all the way down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) — a long, tiring, but exhilarating descent through the vastly changed perspective of daylight. Dinner at Horombo and a deep, well-earned sleep.

Ascent: Kibo Hut (4,700 m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) | ~6–7 hours
Descent: Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut (3,720 m) | ~5–6 hours

Day 5 Kibo Hut to Summit to Horombo Hut

The final trekking day descends through the familiar moorland and back into the cool embrace of the montane rainforest, completing the full ecological journey of Kilimanjaro from summit to base. The tipping ceremony at the gate is a warm, communal moment — an opportunity to thank every member of the team whose work supported your summit. At Marangu Gate (1,860 m), your summit certificate is collected, a celebratory lunch is served, and your vehicle awaits for the return to Moshi. The mountain rises behind you. You have climbed it.

Day 6 Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi Town

After breakfast at our familiar time of 07:00 hrs, we seize the opportunity to express our gratitude to our hard-working guides and porters during the important 'Tipping Celebration'. Following this, we depart from Horombo Huts (3720 meters) and begin our descent towards Marangu Gate (1970 meters), with a stop at Mandara Hut (2700 meters) around midday for a cooked lunch.

Marangu Gate (1970 meters) is typically reached by 16:00 hrs, and today's section covers approximately 20km/12 miles, requiring 5 to 7 hours of walking time. Upon reaching Marangu Gate (1970 meters), you'll receive your certificate—a fitting souvenir acknowledging your remarkable achievement. We then return by vehicle to Arusha, where you can relax at your lodge for an overnight stay, reveling in your well-deserved accomplishment. Alternatively, if you're still brimming with energy, you can celebrate your incredible feat. After all, you've just conquered Africa's highest mountain!

Day 7 Departure – Kilimanjaro International Airport

After a refreshing night's stay at your lodge, you'll enjoy breakfast in preparation for check-out by 10:00 hrs. (If you prefer to remain at the hotel throughout the day, please inform us when booking your trip, and we'll provide you with the cost for a 'day room' allowing you to stay until 18:00 hrs. We'll then arrange the booking on your behalf.)

If you've arranged a transfer to the airport, a vehicle will pick you up from your hotel and transport you to the airport. For travelers embarking on a safari adventure, our Shammah Wonders guide will meet you in the evening to provide a briefing.
